Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the international community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, as proclaimed by UNESCO, reaffirming the indispensable role of a free, independent, and responsible press in safeguarding democracy, strengthening transparency, and ensuring the public’s right to access accurate and timely information.
This day serves as a powerful reminder that press freedom is not merely a professional entitlement—it is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. A free press illuminates truth, exposes injustice, and enables citizens to participate meaningfully in public life. It is a vital mechanism for accountability, dialogue, and the protection of human dignity.
Yet, across the world, journalists and media professionals continue to face growing threats:
- the spread of misinformation and disinformation,
- increasing restrictions on freedom of expression,
- digital surveillance and censorship, and
- grave risks to the safety of journalists, particularly in conflict zones and humanitarian crises.
These challenges demand urgent and coordinated action. Strengthening legal protections, ensuring institutional safeguards, and fostering an enabling environment for independent journalism are essential steps toward preserving the integrity of information and the resilience of democratic societies.
On this day, we pay tribute to the courage, professionalism, and sacrifice of journalists and media workers who continue to report the truth despite adversity. Their commitment to ethical journalism and public service remains a beacon of hope for communities striving for justice, stability, and peace. We also acknowledge the vital contributions of media institutions, civil society organizations, and international bodies that champion press freedom and uphold the highest standards of professional integrity.
In alignment with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains steadfast in supporting initiatives that advance media freedom, including capacity‑building programs, professional training, and partnerships with regional and international institutions. Through these efforts, the IDU seeks to empower media professionals, promote ethical reporting, and counter the harmful spread of misinformation.
Around the world, commemorative activities—conferences, seminars, awareness campaigns, and public dialogues—underscore the global commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety and independence of journalists.
On this important occasion, the IDU calls upon governments, international organizations, and civil society to renew their commitment to:
- protecting press freedom,
- ensuring the safety and dignity of journalists,
- promoting access to information, and
- fostering a media environment grounded in responsibility, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
Through collective action and international cooperation, we can strengthen a global media landscape that serves the public interest, upholds democratic values, and contributes to a more peaceful and informed world.
